Design

The design for the memorial will be different from the most recognizable memorial for President Washington. While statues and obelisks represent traditional design, I would like to do some a little more modest. I feel this would be very fitting for the former President whose only wish was to be able to go back to Mount Vernon.

The memorial area for President Washington would be sunk below ground level a few feet. It would be a circular design, with benches in the middle of the circle facing the round walls of the memorial. Along each wall would read some of Washington's famous quotes, and at the compass points of North, South, East, and West, different portraits of Washington would be etched in polished granite. This design would allow for visitors to reflect on Washington's wisdom while also admiring his stature.

The Quotes:

"Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all."

"If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."

"Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of everyone, and let your hand give in proportion to your purse."

"Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all."

-All by Washington himself
